Pohlman was born in Albany, N.Y., the son of Daniel and Mary Pohlman. He attended Hartwick Seminary and received a license to preach from the Lutheran Synod of New York in 1821. He served as a minister of various churches in northern New Jersey, serving for twenty one years as the minister of the Evangelical Lutheran Zion Church, New Germantown, N.J. Founded in 1797 as Hartwick Seminary as stipulated in the will of John Christopher Hartwick. In 1927 Hartwick Seminary and the New York Synod conducted a $500,000.00 campaign for a "Greater Hartwick." Included in this plan was an expansion of its collegiate program to a 4 year college. The Oneonta Chamber of Commerce offered to guarantee $200,000.00 and a piece of land if the college would be located in their city.
